School and district's annual calendar:
Homework Policy
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. No homework is given on Fridays and weekends, but on rare occasions encouraged such as reading and reviewing for an upcoming test. Late homework is accepted, but it is the student's responsibility to bring it to the teacher. Homework not turned in does not affect grades, but it does reflect negatively under characteristics of a successful student. We check homework daily. Sometimes when time allows and when beneficial for an upcoming test, homework assignments are corrected in class as a group, but mostly it is just checked for completion with one or two items checked for accuracy. Consequence for not turning in all homework assignments is lunch detention for the day, and a negative point on classdojo. Homework passes are earned for every 10 classdojo points earned and can only be used on one homework assignment. It cannot be used to cover all homework assignments (examples: Spelling mistakes, ELA pages, math pages, etc) and it cannot be used towards a homework assignment that specifically prepares for an upcoming test (examples: vocabulary review, grammar review, etc). The teacher understands that life happens and does accept valid excuses for not doing the homework, but usually requires a parent note explaining the extenuating circumstances. Any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact the teacher. We are here to work together and I thank you for your support (examples: checking the homework, setting aside study/reading time, setting up ST Math at home for extra practice, calling, checking classdojo and my website! Thank you and lets work together to help your child succeed and thrive this year!
Daily Routines and expectations
Every morning we start at 9am D.E.A.R. silent reading time with AR leveled books for 15 minutes followed by 10 minutes of a written response to the reading in their journals. Currently students are writing summaries with two-paragraphs including Close reading strategies such as main ideas, main character's actions, learned facts from non-fiction books, author's purpose, author's point of view, and vocabulary word definitions. After students are done reading their AR books, they take an AR quiz on it and exchange their books at the library. This is a daily expectation. This daily reading and writing activity builds up over time for essay writing. P.E., ELA, and Math lessons follow throughout the day after D.E.A.R. Please encourage your child to read their AR book for at least 20 minutes at home every day.
